COMPTON, Los Angeles County — Compton residents concerned about dangerous speeding on a neighborhood street can find a formal process for requesting some traffic-calming changes through the city’s Public Works documents.

The city’s published Speed Hump Policy and Procedures states that a petition requires support from a substantial majority, 75 percent or more, of residents or homeowners on the street. Public Works also provides an application for traffic-control devices such as stop signs, signals, speed humps and crosswalks.

What a petition does — and doesn’t do

A completed petition shows community interest but does not itself install a speed hump. Requests still need city review against street conditions, safety considerations and applicable standards. The requirements for a traffic signal or crosswalk may be different from those for a speed hump.

Where to start

Read the city’s current forms and ask Public Works whether your street qualifies before collecting signatures. For public-street concerns, Compton lists its Street Maintenance Division at 310-605-5691 and the broader Public Works Department at City Hall.
